Defining Roles and Responsibilities

Clear roles and responsibilities are essential for team efficiency, accountability, and long term success. When every member knows what they own, teams reduce confusion, prevent duplicated effort, and create a culture of ownership and collaboration.

Key Roles

Build Lead

Responsible for mechanical design, assembly, and fabrication of the robot. Coordinates with programming and engineering subteams to ensure integration and functionality.

Programming Lead

Oversees software development, sensor integration, and autonomous routines. Works closely with the build lead to ensure control systems align with mechanical design.

Outreach Lead

Manages community engagement, sponsorship communications, media presence, and public demonstrations. Ensures the team maintains visibility and builds a positive reputation.

Operations / Logistics

Handles inventory management, scheduling, event planning, travel logistics, and general operational support. Ensures the team runs smoothly behind the scenes.

Notebook / Documentation

Maintains engineering journals, design documentation, meeting notes, and submission materials. Supports knowledge retention and ensures compliance with FIRST awards criteria.

Responsibility Matrix

Documenting roles using a responsibility matrix clarifies ownership, expectations, and overlap zones where collaboration is encouraged. This approach helps avoid bottlenecks and ensures accountability while allowing flexibility for mentorship and cross training.
