Securing a Build Space

A reliable and well equipped workspace is foundational for any community FTC team. The build space must support mechanical fabrication, electronics work, programming, team meetings, and safe storage of equipment. Choosing the right location early prevents logistical bottlenecks and ensures consistent productivity.

Space Requirements

Secure Storage

Robotics kits, tools, and components must be safely stored. Lockable cabinets or shelving protect equipment from damage, theft, or environmental hazards.

Power and Lighting

Reliable electricity is essential for tools, computers, and lighting. Adequate overhead and task lighting improves precision during assembly and reduces fatigue during long build sessions.

Work Surfaces and Tools

Provide sturdy tables, benches, and tool stations suitable for assembly, soldering, and programming tasks. Access to basic hand and power tools, along with measuring instruments, is essential for safe and efficient work.

Internet Access

A stable internet connection is necessary for research, collaboration, programming, and submitting official FIRST documents or updates.

Safety Equipment

Ensure availability of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves), and clear emergency procedures. Safety should never be compromised in pursuit of productivity.

Potential Venues

Community teams often leverage a range of accessible spaces:

  • Libraries with maker or STEM labs

  • Maker spaces or innovation hubs

  • Community centers with flexible room rentals

  • Churches or religious institutions with open meeting areas

  • Donated commercial spaces such as warehouses or office suites

  • Partner schools willing to provide lab access after hours

Selecting a space that is both accessible to students and sustainable long term is critical for operational stability and team morale.
